From 2009 until 2015 Diadem International supported a school for orphans that was established by the Late Shahbaz Bhatti, as a result of the Mansehra earthquake in 2005 in the district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, North-West Pakistan. The school in Balakot has approximately 120 students (55 girls, 65 boys), a principal, six teaching staff and two security guards. The ongoing challenges of maintainence, security concerns and threats of terrorism has not deterred the goal of providing quality education for both young boys and girls. Through the years, friends initially in South Korea, USA and in the United Kingdom helped to support this entire school, when at times it needed significant renovation.
Though the school faces many challenges, it is now self-supporting through the unwavering commitment of school staff, families and the local community. This is the ultimate aim of all our projects.
